Meet our new coaches

We would like to introduce you to two of our coaches here at IST. Many of you already know Katie Moench as she has been coaching here for a few years and now Joe Gonrowski who began coaching here with us in May of 2018.

Katie grew up in Carlton, MN and graduated from Maranatha Academy, in Superior, WI, having played volleyball, softball, and basketball in high school. At UWS, she played 4 years of basketball and softball for the Yellowjackets and was a member of the 2004 softball team inducted into the school’s hall of fame and the recipient of the Dr. Lydia Thering Most Dedicated Female Athlete award. Since graduating from college, Katie has continued to enjoy competition by coaching high school girls in basketball, softball, and volleyball for several nearby school districts.

Katie is a strength and conditioning coach at IST and a CrossFit Level 1 Trainer and has coached with us since 2015. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Wisconsin-Superior in 2007 with a degree in Exercise Science and a minor in Coaching. She earned her Masters of Physical Therapy from Western Carolina University in 2009 and her Doctorate of Physical Therapy from the College of Saint Scholastica in 2015. She currently works as a pediatric physical therapist at Essentia-St. Mary’s Children’s Hospital.

Joe is from Elk River, MN, and is currently pursuing his Masters Degree in Exercise Physiology from the College of Saint Scholastica. Joe earned his undergraduate degree from St. Scholastica in 2018 where he majored in Exercise Physiology and minored in Psychology. He was also a member of the baseball team and worked in Residential Life for two years. He also played baseball for the Duluth Huskies in the summers of 2016 and 2017.

Joe is a strength and conditioning coach at IST and a CrossFit Level 1 Trainer. In addition to coaching CrossFit classes, Joe is an integral part of our middle school and high school athlete training sessions. Joe started at IST in January of 2018 as an intern, and quickly demonstrated the qualities we look for in a coach. We are very happy to have Joe as part of our coaching staff.
